If you spend any time online, you are probably aware of the many social networking sites that can be found. You may even have a page of your own on one of them, or have had friends ask you to start one. These are great ways to keep in touch with those you know and love, and it can also be a great way to locate people you may be missing and have not seen for a while. Luckily, these come with their own searches so that some of the work is done for you.
Think about the person you are searching for before you begin. If you are looking for someone from college or high school, you should add that information to your profile on MySpace, FaceBook, or any other networking site you choose. If you don’t have a profile, you can set a simple one up very easily so that you can use the search more effectively. When you add your school or schools, you can join groups that contain only those that attended your school. This might be all you need to do to find someone.
You may have to do more searching, however, if nothing comes up through your school networks. Some people neglect to add their schools, or they don’t do so for various reasons. That means you should search for their name using that site’s general search. Remember that these searches work in numerous ways, so you will have to decide which works the best for you. These will all bring up different results, so try them all to see what you find.
If you use the general search of the entire site, you will get any results that have that name. That can work if you are looking for an uncommon name. However, like with Google, you may be overwhelmed with the results. There is also a search that searches for usernames, and the name that someone used to sign up for their account. This is probably your best way to see if that person has a page on any social networking site. These results should be more focused and are probably going to be more helpful.
Some of the social networking sites will invade your contact lists - with your permission - and will search for ‘friends’ based on those in your email accounts or whatever other sources you may have. This will alert you to anyone in your contacts that also has a page on that social networking site. You can then choose to send them an invitation to be your friend, or send them a message. You may not have the right person, so be sure to find out if they are your friend or not before you become too familiar with them.
